Non-IMSBC Code information: High carbon iron which is impure; a product that comes directly from the blast furnace reduction of iron oxide in the presence of limestone. Average composition is roughly comprised of silicon (1%), sulphur (0.03%), phosphorus (0.27%) and manganese (2.4%) and the rest being iron. It is actually molten iron that is extracted from iron ore which is siphoned off at the base of the furnace. Pig iron is used as the basic raw material for steel and cast iron, i.e., refined into wrought iron or other alloys. It is shipped in a suitable form for handling and storage purposes, hence the terminology "pig" used; i.e., bar or ingot form of cooled metal.
