Ship loading grain with IMSBC superimposed

Can’t find your solid bulk cargo in the IMSBC Code? What do you do?

Published: 26 July 2023

Providing guidance and the course of action required when you cannot find the cargo and its carriage requirements in the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code.

We often get enquiries regarding cargoes that are not listed in the IMSBC Code. They can be cases where members are not being able to find the cargo that they are supposed to ship in the Code. Other cases would be where the cargo is actually not listed in the said Code and they would like to know the procedures to have it officially listed in the Code in order to facilitate easy shipment. Otherwise, approvals would need to be obtained each time for shipment of the cargo from the competent authorities, which can be a cumbersome process.

In our cargo section, we provide guidance as follows:

  1. how to search for the cargo in the IMSBC Code;
  2. what to do if it is not listed in the Code; and
  3. action steps and procedures required to have a cargo officially listed in the IMSBC Code.

See our solid bulk cargo section for Cargoes Not Listed in the IMSBC Code and IMO Guidelines for submission of Cargoes not listed in the IMSBC Code
