Tim Howse

Who works in commercial shipping?

Meet Tim Howse, Head of Industry Liaison at Gard, the marine insurer

How did you get started in shipping?

I was a mariner at sea for 10 years, having started as a dual officer cadet in the Merchant Navy at the age of 16, sponsored by what is now the Maritime London Officer Cadet Scholarship Scheme, although at that time it was known as the Lloyd’s of London Cadet Scholarship Scheme.

What does your current job involve?

I’ve been a lawyer for around 22 years, and joined Gard’s London office seven years ago. I look after the relationship between Gard and the other clubs in the International Group of P&I Clubs (there are 11 other clubs and the IG Secretariat itself) and Gard’s relationships with other industry bodies. Globally we are involved with about 130 industry bodies..

What do you like about your job?

I love the fact that I am involved in so many different things. Whether it be decarbonisation, human rights, geopolitics, or something more granular, the variety that you get in marine insurance and shipping is second to none. It’s an amazing industry, crucial to everyday life, for everybody.

What does a typical day look like?

I get up around 6am and usually start work around 8am, which can be in our offices in London or Norway, or from the home office. Working for a company with offices around the world and in different time zones, your first call of the day can be quite early! My calendar is filled with meetings and there is also a fair amount of business travel, so some weeks are spent "on the road".  I do my best to have a clear focus on life outside work. Gard is great for a good work life balance. Although I am available, I don’t often send emails outside hours.

What advice would you give to someone starting off in this industry?

It’s a very close-knit industry, so forge good relationships and play the long game.
