US encourages ballast water best management practices after finding coral disease
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) and United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have developed voluntary best management practices for ballast water discharges for ships in order to mitigate the risk of transferring Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease.

Marsden Point, New Zealand, Tops new BIMCO terminal vetting report
Marsden Point, New Zealand came out as the highest rated bulk terminal in BIMCOs Terminal Vetting Scheme. With 161 ships from 132 companies involved in the scheme, the report now covers 419 terminals globally. Just under 95% of the reports were rated average or better, which gave an average rating of 3.6 (out of five), suggesting positive trends for the future.
BIMCO has updated its port information database
BIMCO has updated and restructured its port information database which provides the maritime industry with reliable information about port facilities, working hours and national holidays.

Maritime Anti-Corruption Network launches survey on corrupt practices in Ukraine
The Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) has recently launched a survey concerning corrupt practices in Ukraine. Such practices may take many forms e.g. demands for facilitation payments (low level payments paid to low level government officials to complete routine tasks the company is entitled to), cash payments or in kind requests made by various port authorities.

Nigerian piracy can be managed
On 4 June BIMCO, together with ICS, IMCA, ITF and OCIMF, had arranged a symposium about piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. The symposium came to the conclusion that the Nigerian piracy problem occurs in a small area and can be solved if Nigeria wants it.

Polish Szczecin is top bulk terminal in new BIMCO report
The best performing port, in BIMCO’s Dry Bulk Terminals Vetting Report 2018, is Szczecin in Poland. The report collected input from 144 ships covering 381 terminals. A total of 97% of the reports were rated as average or better, which gave an average rating of 3.6 (out of five). The result is a marginal better than last year’s results.

China has adopted new regulations concerning the reporting of fuel consumption and energy efficiency with effect from 1 January 2019.

Singapore MPA to ban use of open-loop scrubbers
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has decided to prohibit the use of open-loop exhaust gas cleaning systems within its port limits, as of 1 January 2020. MPA chief executive, Andrew Tan, announced the new regulation, which is already part of current legislation, in his opening address at the Singapore Registry of Ships Forum.
