Optional security transit corridors offered for Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Sea of Oman

Published: 09 November 2023

Taking stock of the situation in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Sea of Oman, BIMCO and fellow industry associations have developed transit corridors for the consideration of Ship Masters, Owners and Operators. Use of the corridors is not mandatory, and decisions should be based on a thorough security risk assessment.

Assessment should cover regional threat actors’ capabilities, opportunities and motivation to attack different merchant ships.

This transit corridor guidance complements the following existing guidance, all of which is available at the Industry Maritime Security Website: https://www.maritimeglobalsecurity.org/:

  • BMP5
  • 3 July 2019 Safety & Security and the use of Privately Contracted Armed Security Personnel (PCASP) in Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman
  • Reporting Guidance for vessels transiting the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden (GOO), Arabian Sea (AG), Gulf of Oman (GOO), Straits of Hormuz (SoH) and the Arabian Gulf (AG)
  • 5 January 2021 Industry Update following incident in the Persian Gulf
  • IMSC Bridge reference Card.
