The IMO reference data model

Published: 15 November 2021

Maritime digital solutions are still in their early days but there is massive interest in concepts across the maritime industry. Implementation of common solutions are, however, key to its success.

BIMCO's Jeppe Skovbakke Juhl, Manager Maritime Safety & Security, explains in these short videos.

1. The IMO has made it mandatory that national ports and authorities to support electronic clearance of ships entering its ports. This is in fact a huge step towards maritime digitalisation.

2. The IMO Compendium is paving the way for smart and easy exchange of electronic data by establishing a common data set and a reference data model.

3. A lot of initiatives aim to enhance the maritime digitalisation. But because shipping is global and that ships are operating all over the world, standardisation and harmonisation of the various solutions are key to ensure interoperability.

4. Integration of the logistic and information supply chains across maritime service providers and transport modes are necessary.

5. The challenges emerging from COVID-19 pandemic have enhanced digital connectivity.

6. Faster uptake of standards for digitalisation is needed. The Just-In-Time Arrival concept (JIT) is actually a good example.

7. Uniform implementation of the various maritime single windows globally is needed to ensure interoperability.

8. The maritime industry needs to strive for solutions that enables smart and seamless exchange of data between all involved actors.
