Ship conversion sector gets first ever standard contract

Published: 23 May 2022

The industry’s first ever standard ship conversion contract, CONVERSIONCON, complements BIMCO’s other ship repair and construction contracts. It is available for use on BIMCO SmartCon today.

Ship conversion projects range from small scale modifications to full scale conversions when, for example, a ship is converted for a whole new purpose. CONVERSIONCON is designed to be scalable for both small and large projects. This is achieved using annexes and industry familiar clauses that are found in BIMCO’s forms for shipbuilding and ship repairs – NEWBUILDCON and REPAIRCON 2018

“In addition to regular conversion projects, CONVERSIONCON is particularly relevant in the industry’s drive towards lowering emissions, where owners implement modifications with a view to improving the efficiency of their ships,” says Gregory Fossion, who led the drafting team.

The team also included Matthew Keane (BW Offshore), Kenneth Chong (Keppel Offshore & Marine), Carl Ratjen (Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven), Nicola Cox (West P&I), Chris Kidd and David Choy (Ince) and Adam Goldschmidt (Danish Maritime).
