FuelEU Maritime, the EU’s flagship policy for reducing GHG emissions from shipping, will take effect starting 2025. One of the main ways for ship owners to comply with the increasingly stringent GHG targets will be the use of alternative marine fuels. However, not all fuels are created equal. The EU therefore requires those fuels to be certified to EU sustainability standards by recognised sustainability certification schemes in order for ship owners to be able to count them properly towards their obligations under FuelEU.

Against this background, the 15+15 webinar will explore how sustainability certification for fuels will work under FuelEU. In particular, we will look at the basics of how certification for alternative fuels works, how the sustainability of feedstocks is ensured, how fuels are tracked through often complex supply chains, and how GHG emissions are calculated and verified along the fuel’s complete life cycle.

Thomas Bock is a Senior System Manager at the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) System. ISCC is a globally leading certification system for alternative fuels, with currently over 10,000 companies certified in more than 130 countries. ISCC is recognised by competent authorities in many major energy markets, including by the European Commission for the purpose of fuel certification under different EU regulations.

Thomas leads both the Aviation and Maritime team at ISCC, which includes the management of ISCC’s certification solutions for alternative marine fuels under regulatory frameworks such as FuelEU Maritime, EU ETS, EU Renewable Energy Directive, and the IMO’s upcoming LCA Guidelines.
