Carriage of plastic pellets in freight containers – IMO issues recommendations

IMO advancing work of safe transport of plastic pellets at sea with the issue of IMO circular as the first step of a two-stage approach to address the environmental risks associated with such carriage.

With the aim of reducing the occurrence of spills of plastic pellets at sea, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has now issued a circular setting out some recommendations on how plastic pellets in packaged form should be packed, identified and stowed in freight containers.

While the IMO is taking this as the first step in a two-stage approach agreed to address the sea transport of plastic pellets by sea, which would include the consideration of mandatory measures, please be guided by this IMO circular setting out the full recommendations.
